Hugo's Notebook

We now have learned a bit more about Hugo and the old man. Hugo was being very sneaky about trying to steal another toy from the old man's toy shop. Thinking he was sleeping, Hugo came out of the clock and tried to snatch one. Caught by the old man, Hugo now was in danger of loosing his toys and his notebook. Try to answer this question about the notebook and old man after you have read up to page 61.

Questions to answer:
Why is the old man so interested in the drawings from Hugo's notebook?
What is the importance of the notebook to Hugo?

Happy Reading,

Mr. Wittmer

Teachers:
The hope is to pick up the pace next week. We should all be finished up to page 61 by the end of the first week. Next week's goal is to read up page number 133. We can always adjust this as we move forward.

  31. I think that the old man knows about the mechanized doll, maybe even had a hand in creating or using it in a magic act. The importance of the book to Hugo is that it was a gift from his father who died. He is trying to fix the mechanisms so that he can see what the doll would write thinking that his father may have changed the mechanisms to leave Hugo a message.

  39. The old man was interested in the drawings because the drawings were of an automan that he had made a long time ago that he thought was destroyed and he was confused as to how this boy could access a part of his past that he thought was gone forever. The old man has mixed feelings because he wanted to forget these old feelings but now that he has access to them again he is tempted to embrace them. Hugo is interested in the importance of the notebook because his father had drawn them to help him figure out how it worked and because his father had ended up passing away this notebook was Hugo's last connection with his late father.
